A single piece of equipment, multiple applications: TECAM’s modular project for an electric vehicle

How can an electric vehicle become truly flexible, without being limited to a single function?

This question led TECAM Equipment to develop a project for a customer looking for a versatile, eco-friendly and fully electric vehicle capable of adapting to different operational activities.

progetto modulare TECAM per veicolo elettrico

The request

The customer needed a vehicle that could handle different types of operations while maintaining efficiency and ease of use.

To meet this requirement, the TECAM team designed an equipment solution combining waste collection functions with a modular approach.

Realizzazione di una nuova attrezzatura

The solution

The project resulted in a new equipment setup including:

  • 4 m³ aluminium waste collection body
  • bin lifter
  • DIN forks
  • removable compaction blade

All integrated with a hook-lift system allowing the waste collection equipment to be placed on the ground and replaced with a different setup depending on the required service. An approach that turns the vehicle into a flexible operational platform.

One of the most complex aspects of the project involved sizing the technical components remaining on board the vehicle, such as the EPTO and hydraulic pump. The goal was to make them compatible with multiple equipment configurations. To achieve this, a management system was developed to adjust the EPTO rotation speed according to the installed equipment, ensuring correct performance in every operating condition. Another challenge concerned the unloading phase of the equipment. During ground placement, components such as stabilizers and the bin lifter are exposed to possible damage.

The solution developed by TECAM’s technical department included:

  • rotating stabilizer feet designed to adapt to ground contact
  • an alarm system warning the operator if unloading operations begin without the bin lifter being positioned correctly and safely.

A solution that improves safety and reduces the risk of damage.

KIT installabile direttamente dal cliente

The result

Following the success of the project, the customer later requested an additional development: using the same equipment on multiple vehicles.

TECAM therefore designed a KIT that can be easily installed directly by the customer, complete with detailed instructions, allowing other vehicles to be prepared for loading and unloading the same equipment.

A solution that further increases operational flexibility and optimizes resource usage. This project shows how development does not stop after delivery.

Each request becomes a further evolution of the project, with solutions shaped by real operational use and adapted over time.

Not every vehicle downtime is mechanical

Not every vehicle downtime is mechanical

When the issue is electronic: diagnostics and restoration of an electric vehicle for urban hygiene services

Not every vehicle downtime is caused by mechanical or structural components. More and more frequently, especially on electric-powered vehicles, the issue originates from the electronic management systems.

The problem

This was the case of an electric vehicle for urban hygiene services that arrived at TECAM Service on a recovery truck: the vehicle could no longer move and a blocking error message appeared on the onboard display.

The solution: electronic diagnostics on the electric drive system

The first step was an in-depth diagnosis using SDC, our computerized diagnostic station connected to the vehicle’s data transmission system.

Through CAN-bus parameter reading, the technicians were able to analyze the behaviour of the drive system and identify an anomaly in the battery pack management system.

To identify the actual cause of the failure, it was necessary to remove the traction battery pack, a delicate operation requiring specific expertise on electric vehicles and high-voltage systems. This activity can only be performed by qualified PES/PAV/PEI operators, according to current regulations for work on electrical systems.

The intervention: targeted repair on the battery management circuit

The analysis revealed a malfunction in the battery cell management circuit.

Instead of replacing the entire module, a quicker but far more expensive solution, the team investigated further to identify the specific faulty component.

The repair was then carried out by replacing the defective management circuit, restoring the correct operation of the drive system.

This type of intervention demonstrates how maintenance on electric vehicles requires cross-disciplinary expertise involving electronics, digital diagnostics and practical vehicle knowledge.

The goal is not simply to put the vehicle back on the road, but to do so with a technically reliable and cost-effective solution for the customer.

At TECAM Service, in-depth diagnostics allow targeted interventions, avoiding unnecessary replacements and ensuring operational continuity.

Job order management: our new monitoring system with Industrial Cloud

Job order management: our new monitoring system with Industrial Cloud

With the support of Industrial Cloud, TECAM is implementing a new digital system for monitoring and managing production job orders.

A project designed to improve the daily work of the entire company: fabrication, assembly, technical office and warehouse operations. A new step forward that is already bringing fresh energy into our facility.

How does the new system work?

At the core of the system is a finite capacity dynamic scheduler: an advanced tool capable of calculating production times and delivery dates based on actual production capacity.

No more rough estimates or approximations. Forecasts are generated from real, constantly updated data.

The system also learns from the production flow itself. It detects delays, reports issues and builds operational knowledge over time.

A real digital brain supporting people’s work and helping keep every stage of production under control.

What changes in practice?

Interactive screens will be installed in the assembly areas of the workshop.

Operators will digitally register the start and end of each operation, while a dedicated interface will display all the information related to the ongoing activity.

A simple step, but one that completely changes the way production activities are tracked, making real-time monitoring and transparency possible.

Why are we doing this?

Because better monitoring leads to better operations.

With the new system we can:

  • optimize production times
  • improve internal efficiency
  • provide customers with more reliable delivery information
  • increase the competitiveness of our production department

An important investment marking a new phase in TECAM’s growth and digitalization journey.
